How long does it generally take for a seroma to absorb?

I had incisional hernia repair surgery March 6th, (it was a large hernia, but he did it laproscopic doing 11 holes to do the repair) 2 weeks after surgery I thought the hernia was back, I went back to surgeon, they did a CT and it is a sernoma. He said he felt in my case it would reabsorb and didn't want to risk infection. He said it would take a long time for this to happen. Is he right? Its a little sore (has been from start), no fevers or anything unusual, its just... there

Thanks for your question. Small seromas less than the size of a marble can resolve. Anything larger I prefer to aspirate. There is a risk of infection performing this procedure especially if any mesh was used in your repair. Aspirating the seroma will decrease the healing time. Hope this helps,Dr. ResultsMiami, FL

When seroma occurs, it may necessitate serial aspirations or drain placement along with compression garment.  If you have had seroma since your surgery (3-4 months), I would have a concern that you have developed a chronic seroma (with bursa surrounding the seroma).  Once you develop bursa, your body will not absorb the seroma.  Please see your plastic surgeon to be evaluated.  Good luck.
