4 days ago a football got kicked to my face causing a nosebleed. A small bump appeared on my right side of the nose on the nasal bone. Only right side profile looks normal but left has a bump which is visible in some angles. I want to know if it’s swelling or if a bone has caused this hump. What procedure would be required if it’s a permanent hump. Only happened recently. Not sure how long left till my nose heals and it’s harder to do surgery on. My nose before was smooth and no bumps.

Answer: Nasal injury Typical signs of having fractured your nose include hearing a crack and seeing obvious deviation of the nasal bone. Facial fractures, including nasal bone fracture typically leave people slightly bruised. From your pictures there is no obvious indication of a nasal fracture but we can’t give you a quality assessment without an exam or x-rays. If you think your nose looks relatively straight, then there’s probably no fracture and you don’t need to have your nasal bones reduced. Most people who break their nose have a fairly obvious deviation. Most people also recall hearing at crack, though sometimes things happen kind of fast. In your situation, you’ll need to make the decision if you should get a valuated or not. When people have nasal fractures, it is my personal preference to get the fracture reduced as soon as possible. I typically do not wait for swelling to subside and like to get them reduced within a few days. Best, Mats Hagstrom, MD
