Recessive chin - best course of action? (Photo)

Question

I'm a 27 year old female unhappy with my recessed chin. I've seen a plastic surgeon before about liposuction who advised because of my weak chin lipo wouldn't make a huge difference, so would need to consider another option. Would I be best with filler, an implant or genioplasty? I also don't want to exaggerated my asymmetry from the front.

A formal evaluation would be needed to determine the best treatment. There are surgical and non-surgical options to correct this.

We can place a chin implant, which is a quick and effective surgical procedure, especially for your situation. Many of my patients try to avoid surgery, however, so for those patients, we also offer non-surgical chin augmentation with injectable fillers. Fillers like Radiesse, Voluma, BellaFill, and Sculptra are injected into the area to improve the overall appearance of the lower face and balance the jaw and lip harmony. We use cannula injections to meticulously contour and project the chin, soften the chin along the jawline, and improve the chin crease.

Implants are a great option once you are ready for permanent chin enhancement.​ I suggest getting a consultation with an experienced cosmetic dermatologist and facial sculpting expert, or an aesthetic facial plastic surgeon like Dr. Donald Groves; we are both located right here in Los Angeles.

I recommend a chin implant. This is done intra-orally so there is no visible scarring and the chin implants have large wings which will fill out the entire lower mandible area. The procedure takes about 45 minutes to perform under general anesthesia and costs $4,000.

You would likely benefit from a chin implant or sliding genioplasty. If your chin is short in the vertical plane then I would recommend a genioplasty over a chin implant. I take a CT to determine the overall length.

Based on your photos, I agree that you have a poorly projected chin on profile, and additionally you have a relatively short chin appearance on front view. These two issues are easily addressed with chin implant surgery through a small incision under your chin. You may benefit from an anatomical implant rather than an extended implant so that we could keep a tapered chin appearance on front view. The necessity for neck liposuction would be determined with an examination. Frankly, it may not be necessary. We prefer chin implant surgery to genioplasty surgery for many reasons. If someone does not like the way a chin implant looks, they are ridiculously easy to remove. Genioplasty involves repositioning your chin bone, and based on what we have seen from others, is less precise insofar as achieving a desired result. Plus there is a significant amount of downtime with genioplasty surgery. I hope this helps! Sincerely, Dr Joseph

Each of the three treatment options you described have advantages and disadvantages.
Plastic surgeons seem to prefer implants while oral surgeons seem to prefer doing the sliding genioplasty.
This is not universal and some plastic surgeons are definitely trained in doing a sliding genioplasty.
My best recommendation is to start the process by getting a formal cranial facial assessment with Each of the three treatment options you described have advantages and disadvantages.

Sometimes it’s not just a mental region of the mandible that is deficient. Sometimes there can be deficiency in the body of the mandible as well.
Some people may need vertical augmentation, as well as horizontal augmentation.
In my opinion, oral surgeons may have an upper edge at a more comprehensive approach to making the assessment.
There are a lot of variables to take into consideration, and doing a quality assessment on this part of the face is not always easy or straightforward.
Some providers definitely do a better job than others.
