Would masseter Botox for teeth grinding make my face appear longer and more gaunt? (photo)

Question

I already have a long face and big chin so don’t want to make it appear larger than it is. I just wanted a slimmer face and a smaller lower face as i feel like my chin brings a lot of attention to it. Will the botox make my face look longer and my face more gaunt? bc of my cheekbones. I have added a pic too.

Botox can help with slimming your face. Based on your photo - it will not make your face look gaunt.  You have high cheekbones and good volume so it will actually create more of a heart shaped face. When you get Botox injected for TMJ it is typically injected in masseter muscle (sometimes in combination with other areas) and is known to have a slimming effect in the lower face. I don’t believe this would make you appear more ‘gaunt’. You could start on the lower dose of recommended dosage for masseter Botox and keep in mind that if you are not happy with the appearance, the Botox tends to wear off in 3-4 months. Hope this helps!

Hello mogumogu1829! My name is Jessica, I am a physician assistant, and one of the providers at Shah Facial Plastics. This is a great question. Botox for the masseter muscle is a great way to relieve pain that is caused by TMJ. However, there is a slimming effect that occurs around 4-6 weeks after the initial injection. With that being said, when the masseter muscle shrinks, there is going to be associated loss of volume and hence a slimmer appearing face. I hope this helps!

Thank you for question.There are actually 2 questions to address: teeth grinding and elongated face with a prominent chin.It seems your left side of face has a more prominent masseter.And if it so, Botox to left masseter might help for teeth grinding and to create more symmetry to your face.If right side more bothersome, I would advise to use a sleeping mouth guard as one of the best ways to stop grinding teeth.The elongated face: plump up your cheeks: it will create fullness and bring more balance to the face.The prominent chin: Botox to relax the chin, and Botox along the jawline and for platysmal bands in the neck: it will bring more balance to your face.Consult your aesthetic provider for full face assessment, employ step by step plan to achieve your goals.All the best, Dr.Liliya
