Belly button not healing well after tummy tuck. What is going on here and why did this happen??

I can't comment on your specific case but it's possible thatThe umbilical stock is retracted from the skin after and abdominoplasty. Often times this will heal spontaneously but generally a revision is required.

Difficulties with bellybutton healing can be very troublesome and persistent. Sometimes they are related to a small cavity near the stalk of the bellybutton, sometimes they are related to a deeper stitch which has seeded with bacteria. One potential solution could be for your surgeon to scrape the inside of that cavity with a small curet. However, he or she would need to examine you in person before deciding if that is a good idea or not depending on how things look. Sorry you are experiencing difficulties after a tummy tuck.  All surgeons at some point run into problems with the umbilical stalk.It is hard to diagnose what is occurring with your umbilicus without a physical exam. From your description, it sounds like the umbilicus retracted.  This will heal on its own with the packing (over weeks to months), but many times requires a revision surgery.  Continue following up with your Plastic Surgeon.Best of luck.Dr. T

It is difficult to determine what is going on with out a photo or physical exam. Proper wound care should give you back a belly button.

Finally, make sure that your doctor is
aware of your process. He should be able to guide you best in your care.

It is not easy to try to answer your question without a photo.  What probably happened was a separation of the sutured incision affixing the navel to the skin of the abdominal wall. Why is hard to say without more info.  Your surgeon will be in better position to answer this. Please consider reposting with a photo.All the best. 

We have all had belly button healing troubles; I do believe you are correct by assuming that healing should occur from bottom up so that there are no air pockets or cavities left; I am willing to bet that you may have a piece of suture that is causing a suture granuloma that is preventing you from healing in, but time will tell; One way or other you will either heal or require a debridement to ensure that no suture granulomas or open cavities/capsules are left behind.
