Can't breathe out of one nostril after structural rhinoplasty? 5 days post op.

Question

I had a structure rhinoplasty 5 days ago. I haven't been able to breathe out of my left nostril at all. It isn't completely clogged or anything, i have had some blood/watery discharge. It looks a bit pinched and I feel pressure. My right nostril is completely fine. I can breathe through it and looks more rounder and less pinched. I asked my surgeon and he said just to use a Q tip and some hot water mixed with some salt. I would just like a second opinion on what it could be.

Hello and thanks for the question. Difficulty breathing after rhinoplasty is quite common and in fact is expected. There is tremendous swelling and build up of crusts and clots that occurs after the surgery. The fact that you do not have normal airflow right now is not indicative of what your final result will be.  I would recommend following the instructions from your surgeon and this issue should resolve.  Though it can take several weeks to months for all of the swelling to subside. It is far too early to assess the final results, as swelling will occur for the next several weeks to months.  I expect the majority of swelling, depending on what was actual done, will subside in 6 weeks.

At 5 days post-op you are likely very swollen.  It can take months for  the swelling to come down and for you to possibly breathe more easily.

It takes weeks to a year for all the swelling to subside following Rhinoplasty.  It is far too early to make a judgement on your result.  Follow up with your surgeon so he can monitor your progress.
