Ultra Marathon/ Iron man training- Is Breast Augmentation wise?

Augmentation will require a temporary pause in activity to allow for healing.

That being said most will return to full activity once healed (6-8 weeks post op).

I have patients who are bodybuilders, marathon runners, kickboxers, and skydivers, to name a few activities. High level athletes can safely undergo breast augmentation. However, there are several important considerations. The first thing to consider is the overall size and volume of the implant. In general, smaller implants require less support since they weigh less. Thus, over time, they are less likely to "droop". Regardless, wearing a supportive bra with activity at all times is important. If marathon running prevents the wearing of a supportive bra, then augmentation should be delayed. It should also be noted that high levels of activity such as running do increase your chances of implant malposition over time even with the proper support. Second, the placement of the implant is important. Sub-muscular placement requires elevating the pectoralis muscle, which can effect its performance in high level athletes. Thus, subfascial or subglandular placement may be better for athletic individuals. If I were to perform your procedure, I would recommend small to moderate size implants in the subfascial position with a supportive mesh assuming you had adequate breast tissue. I would also review with you carefully the effects of exercise on your implants. I have safely performed breast augmentation in professional female body builders and amateur marathon runners without issue. If you avoid large heavy implants, running should be fine. However, you do not want to be training heavily or go for long runs until at least 3 months after surgery. You don't want to overuse your pectoralis muscles during that time to encourage the implants to push laterally. Always wear a good supporting bra when you run to prevent the muscles pushing the implants laterally. Biking should not be an issue. Swimming is an issue because of the muscle use, and you will need to not train for at least 3 months.

You must decide for yourself if breast augmentation is for you. Many athletes undergo breast augmentation and are able to return to the activities they enjoy once fully healed. After surgery you will have a recovery period which will include rest from exercise. When returning to activity you want to gradually increase your intensity. The implant size you are considering is on the conservative side so it should not hinder you.
