Certainly the best available evidence for hair loss supports finasteride and supports minoxidil. I have had some tremendous success with the combination of oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. In fact I frequently prescribe the two together for young men such as yourself. Finasteride should be taken for life and its recommended that you continue minoxidil lifelong as well however I have had a number of patients who eventually stop using minoxidil while continuing with finasteride and still maintain their hair. Stopping all medication means going back to wherever you would have been if you had never taken any medication. You won't lose any additional hair than you would have lost naturally. A consultation with a qualified hair restoration physician is highly recommended.

Many patients use both medications to combat their hair loss, and they work together well. In general they are both considered treatments that once you start, you need to continue using indefinitely though. Every single medical treatment for genetic hair loss in men is lifelong. There is nothing different from minoxidil and finasteride than any other treatment- they need to be used forever. Many men do combine minoxidil and finasteride and studies have clearly showing using both is more effective than using just one. But you'll want to have a careful discussion with your physician to determine which ones are appropriate and safe for you.

Minoxidil is an OK choice to prevent hair loss, but the results are minimal.  After stopping minoxidil the hair usually will begin to fall out again. I strongly advise AGAINST finasteride, as the side effects can be devastating especially in young patients.  Permanent ED, fatigue, depression, are just a few of the side effects.  It's like chemical castration.
With your stage of hair loss I suggest PRP treatments, ketoconazole shampoo, and possible laser hair therapy.  If it worsens in a few years then a hair transplant may be necessary.  Hope this helps!

Yes, you can do this, but then if it works you will not know which is the drug that is working. At your age, assuming that you get diagnosis confirmation as I said in an earlier response, I would just start on the finasteride first and see the response in a year,
