IPL didn't remove my age spots and actually made them appear darker. What can I try that will be effective?

question in regards to IPL. When treating age/sun spots they will appear to be darker, than flake off. It is best to review before and after photos for assurance. To be sure what is best for you, see two
or more board-certified providers in your area for a complete evaluation to
make sure you are a good candidate and that it is safe for you to have

It also depends on what kind of lesion it is.  Any lesions that are not essentially flat respond suboptimally to IPL.  Fraxel or the qs Nd-Yag are good options.  Good luck.Best, Payman Kosari, MD, FAAD

I suggest posting photos, doing considering Fraxel treatments for brown spots.   If there is post inflammatory pigmentation this should be treated with lightening creams.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Since the IPL is bringing the pigment up to the surface of the skin it could take several treatments and also appear darker after the treatment.  This actually means the pigment is surfacing and should be able to be removed by a few more sessions.  There are many different machines out there, it is possible the machine they are using is an older model and not as strong. 

Without a picture it's not possible to give specific recommendations but you might benefit from other treatments such as chemical peels and bleaching creams.  Make sure that you are seeing a board-certified dermatologist for your treatments.  Regards,Dr. Ort

"Age Spots" are a lifetime's worth of sun exposure, there's simply not going to be a quick fix.  IPL is a great place to start; you can see improvement in pigmentation, redness, and stimulate collagen ... but it can have it's limitations when used alone.  Daily skin care between treatments is crucial, and may include a bleaching cream.  Laser resurfacing treatments can also be very helpful, and can also improve fine lines and wrinkles.  There are so many options out there and advancements in technologies, it's difficult to advise what is best for you especially without photos.  The best thing to do is find a location with a Board Certified physician that is on site.  Good luck!
