Why are my eyes wet and weeping during sleep 3 months after upper blepharoplasty?

Question

Do i need to be worried about waking up in the night with really wet eyes and sore in the morning, like some one has been poking eye ball ? Is this normal 3 months after an upper blepharoplasty? Are my eyes opening when i sleep and should i be worried by this? Thanks in advance :-)

This is not normal after eyelid surgery but it is fairly common.  Generally the cause of this is not the removal of too much skin but rather a weakening of the muscles that help close the eyes.  Often there is a preexisting  history of dry eye or dry eye symptoms but not always.  Individuals with a prior history of laser refractive surgery (LASIK) are at increased risk.  Simple measures such as bland ophthalmic ointment at bedtime and artificial tears during the day can help.  I would recommend that you have your general ophthalmologist or a fellowship trained oculoplastic surgeon examine you.  They will have the training, skills, experience, and equipment needed to diagnosis why you are having these symptoms and be able to make appropriate recommendations based on a good faith examination of your eyelid.  Your plastic surgeon unfortunately lacks these resources to get to the bottom of your symptoms.

I would suggest trying an ophthalmic (eye) lubricating ointment or gel in each eye at bedtime and see if this helps.  Ceiling fans can also cause the symptoms you are describing.  It is possible your eyes are not fully closing while trying to sleep.  I would check with your local surgeon or an ophthalmologist to make sure no damage is occurring to your eye surface.

It is unusual to have significant watery eyes 3 months after upper blepharoplasty. I recommend that you discuss your concerns with you plastic surgeon.It is also concerning that you are having pain in the morning. If your eyelids are not able to close completely when you sleep you could be at risk for corneal irritation/abrasions and other complications.
