I am 30yrs old and in very good shape. I've been competing in fitness competitions for years. I maintain low body fat thru diet/exercise, but cant achieve a smaller waist. In my everyday life, I'm very unhappy with my lack of an hourglass figure. My waist is shorter... and I know this is drastic but I've heard of rib removal to reduce waist. I've used waist trainers, corsets, and other treatments that minimally help. Is there any surgical procedure that will permanently reduce waist size?

Answer: Waist definition Hello thanks for sharing your query. The shape waist or the narrowest portion of abdomen depends on your rib cage and pelvis structure and also on the abdominal muscles. Though people have gone extremes of removing ribs to achieve a narrow waist it is not advised for all. An alternate way to create a narrow waist is the oblique muscle fascia plication and superficial fascia plication. But this will require an abdominoplasty type of incision. Consult a board certified plastic surgeon.

Answer: Rib Removal The last anatomic obstruction to horizontal waistline reduction is rib removal. If ever other soft tissue reduction has been done (liposuction and oblique abdominal fascial plication if so indicated), then subtotal rib removals (10,11,12) with latissimus dorsi muscle wedge resection will provide the las definitive effort for waistline shape improvement.
