Can I take a GLP-1 before rib remodeling? Will it affect bone density?

Hi, I'm 29 and interested in rib remodeling. I'm planning to start GLP-1 in a few months and get the rib remodeling done in about a year. Will taking GLP-1 affect bone density or my candidacy for the procedure? Thanks!

Great question. A GLP-1 by itself isn't a reason you can't have rib remodeling. What matters more is where you are in your weight loss journey.

If you're planning to lose a significant amount of weight, I'd rather see you get close to your goal weight first. That allows us to plan your procedure around your long-term body shape instead of one that's still changing.

As for bone density, there isn't good evidence that GLP-1 medications directly weaken your bones. Rapid weight loss of any kind can have some effect on bone and muscle if you're not getting enough protein, calcium, vitamin D, and resistance exercise, so those are all things I encourage my patients to focus on.

You'll also need to stop your GLP-1 for a short period before surgery because of anesthesia guidelines.

Overall, at 29 and otherwise healthy, GLP-1 use alone would not keep you from being a candidate for rib remodeling. We'd simply make sure the timing is right and that you're in the best possible position for surgery and recovery.
