I had Botox injections in my forehead 5 days ago and had almost immediate sinus issues. Can they be related?

This is the third time I have had Botox and the only side effect I have ever had was a slight headache. This time, I noticed that one of the injections left me with a strong smell of alcohol INSIDE my nose and a very cold sensation in the same spot. Within an hour, my throat began to burn and I had sinus drainage. The next day, my nose was running like crazy and I had several episodes of extreme dizziness. My symptoms also included neck pain, pain in my upper teeth, facial pain and pressure.

You should see your doctor and let your injector know as well. This needs to be checked out as it may have been a result of your treatment, even if it is highly unusual. Best of luck.

I agree with Dr Davis. there is a warning for Botox to cause flu-like symptoms. your sinus infection may or may not be related to Botox but its best to have yourself evaluated by your PCP

I have never seen this in 9 years of doing botox injections but an allergy or reaction is possible.  I suggest speaking to your physician as soon as possible or going to your general doctor for a check up.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Hello stefw67,Thanks for your question.  While Botox is generally considered safe when injected by a reputable injector, side effects are possible.  I have been injecting Botox for almost 10 years and have never heard of this situation before.  With the H3N2 influenza going around all over the country, it sounds more like a typical viral upper respiratory tract infection.  I hope that you have seen your own regular medical doctor to discuss your symptoms?I would recommend you tell the person who injected you with the Botox about your symptoms so they can report them to Allergan as necessary.Good luck,Dr. Shah

I have been doing botox injection for over 15 years and I have not experienced sinus congestion related to my treatments. Everything is possible but very unlikely for Botox to cause sinus congestion. It could be coincidence, look for other causes of sinus congestion, like allergies,(seasonal, food, environmental, or topical).

I have not seen this in all the years I have injected. Botox does have a side affect profile that does include flu like symptoms. I would definitely notify your injector, hopefully and physician. While anything is possible, it is really unlikely that your session caused problems with your sinuses. I have personally never seen it in 15 years of offering BOTOX.

I have never encountered or heard of the side effects you listed following your last botox injections.  The injections are very localized as to their effect, and I can think of no physiologic or anatomic manner in which the skin botox injections could travel through bone into your sinuses.  I hope you feel better soon, and suspect your symptoms were coming upon you regardless of the botox.   Best regards.
