Is silicone scar tape the same as silicone gel sheets for scars? (Photo)

Question

Does silicone scar tape such as "Mepitac Silicone Tape" work the same as silicone gel sheets for treating scars? Is it as effective? I'm having a keloid removed on my upper ear and I'm looking into purchasing silicone tape or sheets for treatment after. I planned to use the silicone sheets under a compression earring, so I figured the Mepitac Tape would work better because of how thin it is and how it adheres better. I want to make sure it has the same effect as silicone gel sheets though.

Silicone for scar management comes in gel, strips, sheets and other form factors. There may be a biochemical reaction that silicone induces in the deeper tissues that triggers collagen remodeling, though it also may be as simple as the act of massage or putting pressure on a scar can help trigger the remodeling effect. On the ear, it can be hard to get sheets or tape to stick and conform properly, so you may wish to consider gel application with massage. Speak to your surgeon regarding recommendations, of course!

I find that scar ointment (i.e. New Gel or Biocorneum) are ideal to use for scar treatment on the face.  Silicone sheets or gel strips can be awkward to contour on the face and to keep them in place. The ointment is applied 2x/day with scar massage. The scar ointment should contain both silicone and Vit E. Make sure to gently  massage the area several times/day as well. This will help break up the scar tissue and soften the area. Good luck!
