Concave areola complex after breast reduction 11 days ago.

Question

11 days post op breast reduction with 850 gm per side removed. My left nipple and areola complex is concave/inverted. At my 5 day post op visit with MD he was not concerned. I , however, am concerned. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Sometimes the areola  can collapse of bit after a breast reduction. This really is not a problem to concern yourself with. This typically reverses/resolves itself overtime. Continue to follow up with your plastic surgeon.

The look of the concave areolar complex in the early post operative period can be normal and usually resolves in a matter of a few weeks. While your concern is legitimate feeling, this almost always corrects itself. Keep in touch with your plastic surgeon and let him/her know how you feel.

Breast reduction is a surgery where the immediate post-op appearance is not 'what you see is what you get'.  In my experience this happens occasionally and resolves in a few weeks.  I would be patient and tell your surgeon your concerns.  In the rare instance that it persists, your surgeon will be able to improve it with a minor procedure.

It is not uncommon for the areola to be concave a bit.  This can happen early post-op but usually improves with time.

This is not an uncommon occurrence. Often in the OR- they can be inverted or concave but invariable as gravity takes over the tethered tissues relax and settle and the nipple and areola "pop out". I usually see this at the first post op visit a week post op but it can take longer. In the absence of an obvious technical problem- I think the best advice is to give it time and it should correct itself. I see my patients more frequently if this type of thing happens to reassure and perhaps give advice about massage or other measures to hasten correction.
