I had gynecomastia surgery and have two drains in my chest on dec 3rd. I desperately want the drains out. Currently the drains are collecting about 35-40 of fluid. The documentation I received from the surgeon said 30cc per 24hr period for 2 days. Is there any leeway in that number?
Answer: Postoperative protocol Dear rjs7728,I understand your concern. However, without a proper assessment it would be difficult to determine what is wrong. It is best that you visit your plastic surgeon for further assessment. Only after thorough examination you can get proper recommendations and advice. Every plastic surgeon has his protocol regarding drain removal. Answer: Gynecomastia and Drains Excellent question regarding the use and removal of drains, one that I hear from almost every patient postoperatively and one that is always an important topic to discuss preoperatively. While having a drain may be a temporary inconvenience, it's one that has a very important purpose and function in the postoperative recovery process by helping to prevent protein fluid accumulation in the surgical environment. This, coupled with compression garment therapy, is necessary to optimize chest contour and promote healing. I tell patients that the best results after gynecomastia surgery don't come from what a the Plastic Surgeon does in the operating room, but by what the patient does in the weeks after the procedure (monitoring drain output, wearing a compression garment, scheduling regular postop checks, etc.). Last but not least, always speak with your Plastic Surgeon about any questions or concerns you have regarding any aspect of the perioperative process. I hope this helps for you and others like you with similar questions, best of luck during your recovery! Peter A. Felice, MD

Answer: Listen to your surgeon Thanks for your question! I generally have an even lower number requirement for drain removal than your surgeon as increased fluid collection leads to seromas and hematomas. Please protect your financial and time investment and listen to your surgeon. They are doing their best to protect your health and outcome by ensuring adequate drainage. Best of luck!

Answer: When can my Gynecomastia drains be removed? Thanks for your questions. The drains are helping remove the fluid that naturally occurs after your surgery. I recommend to continue to follow the recommendations of your surgeon as to when they should be removed. I know the drains are annoying now but you will have a better recovery in the long run!
