I have been told after having my first child that my uterus was tilted slightly during a gynecological examination. 3 children later, I'm still being told the same thing by different gynaecologists. I plan to get a Mommy Makeover and was wondering, what benefits does a tummy tuck have? Is it possible to it can un-tilt my uterus, or disadvantages, will it cause more harm eventually?

Answer: Can a Tummy Tuck fix a tilted uterus? A Tummy Tuck will tighten the abdominal muscles and loose abdominal skin. It may improve posture and core strength. The lower abdominal bulge we see after having children is due to thinning and separation of the rectus muscles. When you stand up, the intra-abdominal contents exert the greatest pressure in the pelvis and lower abdomen, creating a bulge. A tummy tuck probably has no effect on the position of the uterus.

Answer: Abdominoplasty and uterine tilt Abdominoplasty is not a procedure that is designed to correct uterine tilt, urinary incontinence or any other internal abdominal issue. It will correct a separation of the abdominal wall muscles which may in turn correct posture and increase core strength. In addition, I have not seen any studies that have demonstrated a correction for these issues in most patients. However, I can state that a few of my patients do have some improvement of these issues following a tummy tuck but I cannot say that it is a reliable method for correction. If your OB/Gyn recommends an internal procedure, then consider having this procedure performed first or perhaps at the same time as a tummy tuck so that your scars from the uterine tilt procedure will not be visible. Hope this helps and good luck! Dr. Mills
