Question

I have had 5 children (oldest is 30). I had issues breastfeeding all, couldn't make enough milk even pumping all the time and taking all the meds. I went for a PAP at the only place that would take me at the time - Planned Parenthood - and they were training and told the other doctor these are hypoplastic/tubular breasts, not severe, which cause xyz. First time I had ever been told that. Is that indeed the issue they look like they do? They have been like this my entire life. My insurance says they cover breast augmentation for "verified congenital anomalies or developmental abnormalities" - would this fall under that?

Thank you for pictures and questions.  You currently do not have tuberous breasts and it is unlikely that they were prior to the children although they may have been.  However, now you simply have breast ptosis or droopy breasts very commonly seen after pregnancy.  This can be corrected with either breast lift, or breast reduction or even with an implant and a lift if you desire to be larger.  But unfortunately this is not covered by health insurance.  Be sure to see a Board-Certified PS for your consultations.

You do not have congenital anomality or developmental abnormal breasts. You have large ptotic breasts. The treatment you need is a breast lift, not breast augmentation, and is not covered by insurance. The technique I recommend is the Bellesoma. This will reshape your breast tissue creating upper pole fullness without implants, elevate them higher on the chest wall and more medial to increase your cleavage. Vertical scars are avoided, nipple sensation (in 95%) and the ability to breast feed are maintained.

It would be very difficult to conclude whether your breast were tubular many years ago; multiple pregnancies have changed everything. Now, based on these photos, you have sagging  (ptotic) breasts which need lift and possibly, reduction. Unfortunately, it is not likely that insurance would consider your current condition as congenital. Good luck.

Summer6600,I believe you are asking if you would quality for breast reconstruction (implant placement +/- breast lift) due to a congenital breast deformity. Congenital breast deformities include absence of a breast (often seen in Polands syndrome), tuberous breasts, extra nipples etc. Tuberous breasts have a very narrow and often high base on the chest wall as well as a herniation of the nipple/areola area. There is a classification system that depicts the range of severity of this problem. Depending on your insurance they may determine your correction to be aesthetic and not functional. You can seek a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon who takes insurance to see if your surgery might be covered. Dr Stein

Tubular breasts are considered a congenital anomaly but it appears your breasts are ptotic but not tubular.  In any case a breast augmentation alone would not be the right recommendation for you.  Depending on your goals the best outcome would be from a breast lift with an augmentation.  This would remove excess skin and raise the position of the nipple.  An implant would help give volume and shape.  See a board certified plastic surgeon near you to learn more.
