Trouble swallowing three weeks after cosmetic botox of crows feet, frown line, forehead. Any suggestions?

Typically, difficulty swallowing occurs with deeper neck injections near the esophagus and/or voice box.  Usually, superficial facial Bootx does not cause that issue.  Check back in with your primary to look for other causes and also discuss with your Botox provider.  Good Luck!

Thank you for your question.  It is highly unlikely Botox would diffuse into the muscles that are in play with swallowing.  I suggest you follow up with your PCP and ask to be referred to GI and Neuro to rule out other possible causes of dysphagia such as GERD, stricture, spasm, achalasia, autoimmune disease, etc.  Regards, Dr. Matthew J. Most likely there is no corelation between the injection of Botox and your swallowing difficulty and it would be a good idea to consult a neurologist. However, DO NOT get Botox now to see if it is the culprit because one thing i have learned is that anything can happen in medicine

Before anyone associates the Botox with dysphagia, I would suggest having another course of Botox treatment and see if your swallowing difficulty recurs if not, then it was just coincidental and you should be able to resume Botox regimen. If there is an association, hold off and have a comprehensive neurologic assessment.

Hi Frostychick,Botox has been used for over a decade. It only works on the intended area and the dissipation is only local to the area that is injected. Most probably there was no correlation between your Botox injection and the difficulty swallowing, they were just coincidental in time. You need to have a workup on other neurological conditions that could cause difficulty in swallowing(MS, Myasthenia Gravis, etc). Until that is done, most probably you will not be able to find a plastic surgeon that will inject you with Botox due to that history of swallowing problems.Hope this helps,Dr. Gus Diaz
