I've always had a prominent jaw and cheek bones but I also have a habit of clenching my jaw when I'm stressed. I've been experiencing some on and off jaw pain/soreness which I'm sure is due to my clenching. I've also noticed that since having my wisdom teeth removed 4 years ago while in boot camp part of my jaw and behind my ears have been numb. Could this surgery have anything to do with my jaw appearing larger than it was before?

Answer: Masseter hypertrophy? Your photos and symptoms are highly suggestive of masseter muscle hypertrophy. However, this diagnosis is made in person and not online.Botox and Dysport can reduce the masseter muscle and refine the appearances of your jawline. This does not happen right away or just with a one time treatment. It takes time for the muscle to shrink and you may need 2 or 3 treatments to see maximal results.Always see a certified injector!

Answer: Strong Jaw Hi, It's unlikely that having your wisdom teeth had anything to do with what is going on now. However, clenching your jaw has many bad side effects. I would try to get to the bottom of why you do this as it can affect the TMJ as well as your teeth and likely the masseter muscle. As for Botox, injecting the masseter muscle is a fairly quick, easy, and painless procedure that generally yields effective results. It is affordable, and safe as well. Make sure you seek a qualified Botox injector if you decide to have this done. Best, Dr. Giordano, CAMI
