Do you have to permanently take Spironolactone to have clear skin?

After dealing with acne all through my teenage years, I finally went to a derm and got an antibiotic, then benzoyl, then other topicals like Adapalene. After about a year, my skin was finally clear. It was clear for almost 3 years straight. Then, the insurance company sent me a different dosage of the BC I had been on for years, and it made my skin go crazy. I got back on the original dosage after a couple months, but since that initial shock, my skin has not been the same.

Depending on your skin type, this can vary. I don't believe that you would need to be on spironolactone forever, however you might need to be on it for a while, until you and your dermatologist can come up with a good regimen for you to get off of it.

Thank you for your question. Sometimes patients only need to take spironolactone for a relatively short period of time (3-6 months), other times patients will be on spironolactone for several years to control their acne.
