Do you have to permanently take Spironolactone to have clear skin?

After dealing with acne all through my teenage years, I finally went to a derm and got an antibiotic, then benzoyl, then other topicals like Adapalene. After about a year, my skin was finally clear. It was clear for almost 3 years straight. Then, the insurance company sent me a different dosage of the BC I had been on for years, and it made my skin go crazy. I got back on the original dosage after a couple months, but since that initial shock, my skin has not been the same.

Depending on your skin type, this can vary. I don't believe that you would need to be on spironolactone forever, however you might need to be on it for a while, until you and your dermatologist can come up with a good regimen for you to get off of it.

Thank you for your question. Sometimes patients only need to take spironolactone for a relatively short period of time (3-6 months), other times patients will be on spironolactone for several years to control their acne. It varies on your skin and other acne treatments you may be doing at the same time.I hope this answer is helpful! Best of luck.
