Question

My main concern was a hump removal and making my nose a bit smaller. However it's been 8 weeks and the swelling is as bad as it was the day the cast was removed. I'm concerned about the lower half of my nose appearing larger and crooked! I also do know my surgeon performed an external osteotomy during surgery. In your expert opinions, is this still swelling?

I agree with Dr. Zaworski that the swelling after rhinoplasty can take quite a while to subside. In fact, subtle swelling can be present (usually only noticeable to you and your surgeon) for a year or longer. The same is true for minor asymmetries which in most case resolve over time. While photographs are often helpful, only a physical exam can distinguish normal swelling from a problem.  For this reason, frequent and long-term follow up with your surgeon is recommended. Swelling will persist for up to 1 year after rhinoplasty. Since you are especially early in the process, it is possible that it looks more swollen than you would have hoped. With time the swelling will go down and in order to possibly speed the process I recommend arnica pills, sleeping in an elevated position and cold compressions. Best of luck.Dr. Ali Sajjadian

At eight weeks post-op you most likely have a lot of swelling. This will take a full year to settle completely. Best to be patient at this point.

Your nose definitely looks smaller than before surgery. The area of swelling is the last place for swelling to improve. At this point you need to give it some time. Wait at least 6 months before you evaluate the remaining areas of your nose. The upper part of the nose will be wider because you took down the very thin bump. Talk to your surgeon about your concerns.

It takes weeks to months for all the swelling to subside after Rhinoplasty.  It is important to follow up with your surgeon as often as he recommends to confirm that you are healing as you should.  Best wishes !
