The weekend before my breast augmentation I'll be on a trip for my bachelorette party in Portland, OR. I don't plan on drinking heavily, but I do plan on drinking over the course of our 4 days there. Will this affect my surgery that is 3 days later? Are there any specific types of alcohol I should stick to or stay away from? Thank you for your help!

Answer: Drinking alcohol before a breast augmentation Congratulations on your upcoming marriage.Your timing is good, and choice of beverage doesn't matter. Check with your surgeon, but I tell my patients that they should not drink any alcohol for 48 hours before surgery. Alcohol can increase the risk of complications and slow down the recovery process. However, when you are no longer taking narcotics and muscle relaxants and have had your first postoperative visit, feel free to pop open a bottle of champagne and celebrate. For more information on this and similar topics, I recommend at plastic surgery Q&A book like "The Scoop On Breasts: A Plastic Surgeon Busts the Myths."

Answer: When to stop Alcohol before surgery Hello dear, thanks for your post. I usually recommend that patients stop alcohol consumption for at least a week or two before and after their surgery. Alcohol can thin the blood and thereby increase your risk for bleeding and bruising; this is especially true of red wine. I would recommend discussing alcohol consumption with your operating surgeon prior to your scheduled procedure as they may have different protocols that would be prudent to follow. Good luck :)
