I just went to a consult for a few laser treatments on my face, and the derm I saw insisted the type of machine makes a huge difference (she said Lumenis is the best). I got IPL previously with a Palomar Starlux, so wondering if my treatment maybe wasn't as effective as it could have been with Lumenis..?

Answer: IPL technology The short answer is: Yes. There is a big difference between IPL technology. However there are two factors to consider: 1- is the concern you have best treated with IPL? Or are there are potential technologies that could treat your issue more effectively? This is especially true for conditions such as melasma, spider veins, etc. 2- does the practitioner know how to manage the full capabilities of the IPL machine? It is not uncommon for clients to be either under- or over-treated, sometimes with bad results. Make sure you have a consultation with a qualified physician who can provide you with the best recommendation.

Answer: Do Different IPL Machines have different effectiveness? Hello! The answer to your question is Yes, different IPL machines have different strengths, different capabilities and different filters to address different areas of concern. It also depends greatly on the operator and their proficiency and experience. I have a Sciton BBL, a very powerful form of IPL. In the wrong hands, a powerful IPL can result in burns or post inflammatory hyperpigmentation OR very little effect, if the operator is unaware of how to treat different skin types or is inexperienced. In California, for example, the operator of an IPL or laser must be a physician or RN but there is no mandatory number of training hours. In Arizona, operators may be estheticians, RNs or MDs, but all must have a certain level of training. I would recommend that asking for both the type of machine and the experience of the person operating it would give you the best outcome. Best of luck to you.
