Physical exercise after labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is a great procedure to remove excess tissue of the labia minora (the inner labia) that can sometimes develop with puberty or after having kids. Excess tissue in that area can cause discomfort from getting pinched in clothing or with certain exercise (biking, horseback riding). It can also make for excessive moisture in the area resulting in UTI’s or yeast infections. It can even get in the way during intercourse. Labiaplasty removes the excess tissue, brings things back to more normal proportions and gets rid of those nasty symptoms.
Labiaplasty involves an incision at the base of the excess tissue to remove it. The cut edge is then sewn back together and has to heal. During the healing process it is important to minimize friction and pressure across the incision lines. This means limited walking and exertion and shorter periods of sitting for the first 3 weeks post-op. Usually, by 3 weeks out you can start back on going for walks and using the treadmill or elliptical. Before you would be back to more strenuous exertion it may be a little longer depending on healing and swelling. Due to the location of the incisions it usually is about 6 weeks before using tampons or resuming intercourse (just like after having an episiotomy with a baby). The great thing is that almost everybody who has this surgery done is very happy with the results. It reliably improves the symptoms and it is very rare to see the problem and symptoms reoccur.

Naturally, your surgeon will give the most specific advice for your situation, but 6 weeks is usually enough time to resume exercise and sex without problems.

You should be able to resume cardiovascular exercise at the gym 3 weeks after your labiaplasty procedure.

Thank you for your question. I'm glad you're doing well and happy with your labiaplasty so far. Although every surgeon will have different recommendations for post operative activity restrictions, 6 weeks is usually standard for full activity clearance. During your follow ups, your surgeon will assess your incisions and depending on your healing, you will likely be able to start easing into more vigorous activity after about 2 weeks. We instruct patient to ambulate immediately following surgery and to walk as tolerated during the first two weeks following the procedure. As long as the healing is proceeding as expected, we instruct patients to increase activity but avoid vigorous or intense workouts until 6 weeks. A good rule of thumb is to listen to your body, if you feel that the activity you're doing is increasing your pain, it's a good indication to scale back your activity.

I typically have my patients avoid exercise or sexual intercourse for one month after labiaplasty surgery. This allows them time to heal. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Dear SCI have been performing labiaplasty for more than 20 years and I advise patients not to do aggressive cardio and treadmills for 6 weeks.  I give them the OK to use an elliptical usually at 4  weeks --- Why -- because on the elliptical the feet are apart and there is minimal irritation, rubbing of the labia together.  The elliptical is less traumaticJohn R Miklos MDAtlanta ~ Beverly Hills ~ Dubai
