Previously, I believe I had a reaction to a fractional CO2 laser treatment which caused severe facial swelling and a very itchy rash lasting for 2 weeks. Does this mean I may react with an increased inflammatory response to other treatments in relation to my autoimmune conditions?

Thank you for your question.  Based on your history, I do think that non-collagen stimulating fillers such as the hyaluronic acid based fillers should be fine to use.  I would avoid certain fillers like Sculptra.  To be extra sure, let your UC physician know of your plans and get their blessing.

Fillers are typically safe in these conditions, I suggest speaking to your physician.  I would suggest only HA fillers as they are reversible if needed.  Best, Dr. Emer.

Hello Ljstephen,Resurfacing procedures such as lasers are prone to healing problems and contact dermatitis.  Fillers, injected under the skin, should not be at risk for these same problems.  I would recommend you discuss this with your physician treating your ulcerative colitis to make sure he or she feels it is safe, but I would have no concerns injecting my patients on that medication.
