Hello TMN. Yes, IPL can be used for medium skin types but the risk of side effects is generally higher the darker the skin tone. This is why we normally use lasers. IPL is a very good device for a caucasian with mottled sun damage, but not great for a Middle Eastern patient for hair removal. There are lasers that are very safe for darker skin types, and we would encourage you to post a question about a specific skin condition you have and what lasers may be safe for your skin type.
IPL can be used for all skin types, however, risk of side effects is higher for those with darker skin tones. Especially if the proper machine is not being used right. My best recommendation is to consult with a board-certified dermatologist who can assess your skin type and recommend the best treatment plan that is customized to you and your skin tone!
IPL, developed over 20 years ago in my office and it can be used for all skin types. There are a number of different IPL machine available and some are much better than others. The risk of side effects is generally higher the darker the skin tone especially when using less expensive machines and if they are not used properly. I recommend seeing a board-certified dermatologist who can assess your skin type in person and recommend the best treatment plan that is customized to you and your skin tone!
In the right hands, yes. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist who specializes in lasers. I always combine lasers with microneedling/prp to get more of an outcome. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer
I would be very careful having IPL done if you are dark skinned or if you have middle eastern, Asian, Latin heritage. You can develop complications that can be hard to treat. See a cosmetic doctor with a lot of experience with lasers and light therapy.
Absolutely! Settings for the IPL must be adjusted by the operator for different skin (Fitzpatrick) types to get optimal results while minimizing risks. I would recommend going to a place with experienced professionals. All the best!Dr. Tamboli
Hi there! Great question. Most IPLs can be used on olive skin types BUT the place you choose needs to have a physician on site with lots of experience and knowledge. Using any old place with an IPL can result in major complications. I see that you live in Southern California, a sunny place, and ultraviolet light after an IPL can cause lots of trouble. You may want to look into other laser options that are safer, such as Clear & Brilliant or other nonablative or non pigment-based device.
IPL can be used for olive tone skin however there is a higher risk of hyper or hypopigmentation. Pre-treatment prior to your IPL session can reduce this risk and also you can have spot testing done to see how your skin reacts. Finally, there are other alternatives to IPL such as microneedling or chemical peels which can also have the same effect. Hope this helps!Johnson C. IPL works best for people with lighter skin, but in my practice I use IPL also for darker skin type. You need to find a physician with a lot of experience and someone who has been doing laser for many years.
