What can I do about painful lumps appearing 5 months after Juvederm?

5 months ago I had Juvederm lip injections done. Now I have bumps that are really painful! What can I do? Lumps have appeared and are becoming extremely painful. What are my options I’m getting desperate.

Hello Scatterd.  Although rare, there are side effects that are consistent with what you describe.  Hard (not always painful) lumps that develop post dermal filler injections could be granulomas.  This type of hard cyst is the body's immune reaction walling off the product and surrounding with dense tissue.  These nodules can be addressed typically with steroid injections, but you should check in with your injector to have them evaluated.  Best of luck.

Thank you for sharing your excellent question.  In most cases the Juvederm can be easily dissolved with a product termed hyaluronidase.  I would see your injector, or an ASPS board certified plastic surgeon in consultation to discuss.

If you have painful lumps you need to get them dissolved with hyaluronidase.  You will most likely also need to be on antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medicines.  See the doctor who injected you for these treatments.

This does not sound like lumps of filler that can be dissolved. Rather it sounds like you are having a reaction to the filler. Many times small amounts of injected steroid can improve these. Please return to whomever did your treatment for advice.

There can be multiple reasons for lumps after a filler treatment. Some questions need to be asked first. Were the lumps there immediately after the treatment, remained, and got worse? Did they develop later? Sometimes it is not best to go to a dissolving treatment when lumps develop at a later timeframe simply because it may be a delayed reaction to the filler. not the filler itself. I recommend returning to the provider who did the treatment or seek an experienced board-certified facial plastics physician knowledgeable in not only treatments but complications.

Lumps should not appear months after injection. Please return to your injector to assess if you have developed an infection or other condition that needs treatment. Lumps can be dissolved if needed.
