I have heard that an upper blepharoplasty can cause dry eye in some patients. I am considering a lower eye blepharoplasty with fat repositioning and I'm wondering if this procedure increases the risk for dry eye?

Answer: A blepharoplasty can aggravate but does not cause dry eye syndrome. I don't think a blepharoplasty action causes dry eye syndrome but it certainly can aggravate. Usually lower eyelid surgery contributes more to the problem and upper eyelid surgery.

Answer: Lower blepharoplasty and dry eyes Dry eyes are not usually a problem with lower lid blepharoplasties. The only time it may occur is if the lower lid retracts downward. This problem would create a rounded eye with scleral show (the staring look). It is usually caused by removing too much skin and/ or muscle under the lid. This will not occur with a transconjunctival blepharoplasty, which I would recommend. See a certified facial plastic or oculoplastic surgeon.
