Can Breastfeeding Rupture my Saline Implants?

Question

I have been breastfeeding my baby now for 2 months and I feel the implant on my right side,all I can describe its that it feels loose.it still feels full.maybe not as filled up as it should be.

No breast feeding is not  the cause of implant leakage or rupture. There is no problem breast feeding with a ruptured saline implant to you or your baby. The saline is absorbed as it is just salt water. An Ultrasound test will usually tell if this is the case. If so, speak with your Plastic Surgeon re: best timing for  replacement when you are all finished with breast feeding.

Thank you for your question. The risk of rupturing an implant with breastfeeding is about zero. You are likely experiencing mammary changes with lactating and the implant being affected. This will change more as time goes on, and you reduce size with the end of lactation. I hope this helps.

It's highly unlikely that breast feeding will damage your implants. Because the breasts swell and change with breast feeding, it is possible that the tissue feels loose on top of the implants. However, if you are really concerned about a rupture, you should have your PS examine you.

Breast feeding is not likely to rupture a breast implant. The shape of your breast itself can change after breast feeding depending on how large your breasts get and how much weight you gain in pregnancy. A saline implant will get noticeably smaller when ruptured. If you suspect a rupture, I suggest you follow up with your plastic surgeon to evaluate it.

Dear Jackmad,

	thank you for your post.  Breastfeeding will not rupture your implants.  However, with your breasts constantly increasing and decreasing in size with the milk coming in and being let out, the skin envelope is being streched.  This may be why you feel the implant as loose or not so full. If the implant ruptures, there will be an obvious and complete deflation.

It is highly doubtful that breast feeding would impact implant rupture in any way. If you do feel that you have a rupture it is best to be evaluated by  your surgeon.

Breastfeeding should not cause your implant to rupture. However if it feels loose you should get a mam mogram.

No. If you have a rupture during breastfeeding it is purely coincidental. Implants are extremely durable and a rupture is usually not due to trauma but due to a rare defect in the manufacture of the implant which gives way spontaneously. It is doubtful any impact that does not cause serious bodily harm will cause a rupture. I have had patients in car wrecks where the implants do better than the patient.
