I'm getting a breast lift and implants and want to know the best scar prevention.
Answer: Breast surgery scars Hello and thank you for your question. I typically recommend Biocorneum, a physician-prescribed silicone based scar cream for most of my postoperative scar care. I generally ask that my patients start application of this cream about 3 weeks after surgery. Please note that a significant component of scarring involves tension-free surgical technique and a genetic proclivity to scarring, not just the scar cream used postoperatively. Be sure to look at plenty of your surgeon's before-and-after pictures in women who have a similar breast appearance (in terms of shape/volume/pigment), and preferably at different time frames (3 weeks out, 3 months out, etc) to more accurately predict your own surgical outcome, and focus on not just the breast shape and volume, but also the scar quality. For more information on breast lifts, please refer to my link below. Good luck. Mark K Markarian, MD, MSPH, FACS Harvard-trained Board Certified Aesthetic Plastic Surgeon

Answer: What is the best scar and hyperpigmentation cream for black skin? Sometimes the scar’s pigmentation does not blend well with the rest of the skin. Sometimes the scars are hypertrophic. Sometimes, the scars are keloid scars, which grow outside the original boundary of the scars. Scars are largely a function of the patient’s ability to heal. Sometimes it is the genetic predisposition of the patient to form poor scars. No particular scar treatment is better than another. Silicone sheets, Mederma, and Biocorneum are reasonable and popular options. I recommend that the scar therapy begin after the scars have healed and there are no open areas, which usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. The scars will continue to fade in most cases for at least one year.

Answer: Minimize visible scarring by eliminating the vertical scar Unfortunately, you have not told us your bra size. However, it appears your breasts are quite large and I’m not sure I would recommend implants. In terms of a breast lift, I recommend a no vertical scar technique. This will reshape your breast tissue creating upper pole fullness without implants, elevate them higher on the chest wall and more medial to increase your cleavage. Vertical scars are avoided, nipple sensation (in 95%) and the ability to breast feed are maintained. Later, fat transfers can be performed if additional volume is desired. Implants are not lifetime devices. 6% fail within the first year and 30% fail within six years. Fat transfers are permanent and incorporated into the body.Best Wishes,Gary Horndeski, M.D.

Answer: Scar Dear raheemat1, for scars, I close all of my incisions in 5 layers and do not use absorbable sutures because they cause inflammation and worse scarring. I tape all of my incisions in the office visits once a week for six weeks after surgery to improve the appearance. After taping, I start my patients on a scar gel therapy for 3 months that they have to put on their incisions twice daily. You should discuss your concerns with your plastic surgeon as different surgeons have different approaches in scar management.
