Breast fat transfer post-op care: do I need to wear a compression garment?

Hi Jennifer Ann, thanks for your question.  I always recommend my patients wear a compression sports bra after any breast procedure, whether they got implants or fat grafting.  I recommend 4-6 weeks of compression.  As for the fat transfer to the butt, I recommend a spanx compression x 4 weeks and no exercise. It helps if you place pillows under your legs and hips to relieve some of the pressure on your butt.  Bruising and tenderness are normal and should go away within a week or so.  I suggest you follow up with your plastic surgeon for his/her post operative protocol.  Best of luck! 

Because PSs differ in their post-operative protocols, I recommend that you follow those of the surgeon who performed your breast fat transfer.  Recovery is usually relatively quick. Some PSs will recommend wearing a sports bra for about six weeks, starting immediately after surgery.  Most patients will experience some discomfort, swelling and mild bruising around the donor and breast areas for 1 - 3 days after the procedure. Many of my patients return to work after 4 - 7 days if that work is non strenuous and sedentary.  Vigorous exercise should be postponed for two weeks. Kenneth Hughes, MD, Board Certified Plastic SurgeonLos Angeles, CA

No, I agree with your doctor that I do not believe that compression is indicated after Fat Transfer to the breast.  I am not sure how long after the procedure it has been, but you should give yourself adequate time to heal before being concerned about asymmetries. These can be addressed later if necessary (and it usually is not).   As much as possible, I would avoid sitting on the areas where you had fat grafting for as long as six weeks.  Please consult your surgeon for additional recommendations.
