Implants will show up on any kind of X-ray, but do not interfere with the radiologist's ability to diagnose illness or injury as necessary. This includes CT, MRI or other special studies, all of which are possible. Mammography in a woman with breast implants requires a special technique, called the Eklund or displacement technique, and may also require an additional view or two for maximum tissue visualization. Most experienced breast radiologists are capable of examining 99% of the breast tissue in a woman with implants using these techniques.
You should always tell your radiologist or X-ray technician if you have implants. Special note: if you have tissue expanders in place prior to receiving your final breast implants (such as after breast cancer reconstruction), each expander has a magnet and steel components that are not compatible with MRI, and can interfere with CT scan accuracy.
