Breast augmentation and incisional hernia repair - could they be done at the same time? (Photo)

Question

I have formed an incisional hernia (after weight loss surgery) and need it repaired as it causes pain and discomfort. I am hoping to get Breast Augmentation this year as well. It would be great if I could have one healing session and I was wondering if they could be done at the same time?

Yes, they can be done simultaneously.  The incisional hernia will most likely be repaired by a general surgeon, not your plastic surgeon.

The hernia looks large, so you would need a general surgeon or a plastic surgeon who can do both things.  Some of us received training and board-certification in general surgery along with plastic surgery and are comfortable performing both procedures, often without the use of synthetic mesh.

It is best however that you consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to determine whether you can have several aesthetic surgeries in one session, as this would depend on various factors including but not limited to your general health condition, the type of anesthesia that will be used, and the type of surgeries that will be performed among others.

Both could be done at the same time, but I do not recommend it since there is more risk of infection to your implants and capsule formation. Do them separately.

If it requires two different surgeons then making sure they are both available at the same moment in time can be a challenge. Hernia repair is often done with abdominoplasty but rarely with breast augmentation. It would be entirely surgeon dependent and you would need a workup for the hernia to work out which repair is needed.

Hi thanks for your question. Both your procedures can be done in one sitting. Important part to know is whether your surgeon is trained enough to do both. If your surgeon is comfortable with incisional hernia repair as well as breast augmentation, then it should be fine (depends on their training and the type of repair...with or without mesh).
You should go for several consultations with board certified plastic surgeons and evaluate their responses.
