Why do some doctors don't like doing botox in the masseter? My doctor said she doesnt like the results.

I can't say for sure, but it may have to do with comfort level and experience. The technique can be a bit of challenge when your worry about smile changes and product migration. Botox there does work well and patients are generally pleased with results. Best wishes, Dr. ALDO

Definitely find a plastic surgeon who has experience using Botox for masseter hypertrophy. We commonly inject the masseters, and our patients have been very happy with the results. 

Thank you for your question. It seems like your doctor does not feel comfortable doing the injection. Botox to the masseter muscle needs to be done by an experienced injector. If not done by an expert it can change your smile. Please find an expert in your area. 

Thanks for your question and when someone says they do not do something with Botox, most of the time it is because they do not have the necessary experience with the procedure to feel comfortable with it.  Injections into the masseter, for the right people, can change the facial shape dramatically and give wonderful results.  If your doctor does not like to do that procedure, you need to ask again why – and if needed, ask them to refer you to a colleague who will inject this area if needed.  One more thing – once a syringe of a filler is opened, it should not be kept for another session – there are risks of sterility that need to be understood and your doctor needs to be careful – although many do this we do not think this is the best practice.

Botox injection to the masseter muscles is an injection I perform almost daily at my clinic. Masseter hypertrophy is very common and Botox can be used to relax the muscle and contour the lower face. It absolutely does work and for this reason I have it done to myself as well. I suspect your dermatologist is not comfortable doing the procedure as it does require advanced injection techniques and an understanding of facial anatomy. 

I like Masseter injections in some people, it can help decrease bulky masseter muscles or create balance when there is asymmetry. However, I do think that in some cases using filler to widen the cheek bones can change the proportions to make the lower face look slimmer(relatively speaking) by widening an area that typically narrows from volume loss. For someone who seems to need volume, I am a little hesitant to do something that will further decrease volume. If your doctor is concerned that this may lead to more jowling, I could see them thinking that this might give an undesirable cosmetic outcome. And again, if it is a narrowed upper face making the lower face look relatively wider, widening the upper face will probably give you a superior natural aesthetic outcome.

The procedure works beautifully for the masseter but it takes experience to do it correctly and apparently your doctor is not comfortable with it so I suggest you see someone who is

I don't think your doctor feels comfortable doing the injection. It needs to be done by an experienced injector or there can be a change in your smile. It does work well in slimming a wide face due to masseter hypertrophy. 

Listen to the vibe you're getting off the doctor and never push a doctor to do a treatment that they don't want to do. It either means she's not comfortable with it, or has real reasons that she thinks it could result in a less than attractive result for you. When she says she never does them, that suggests the first of the reasons.

I do many masseter injections in my practice, but they're not ideal for everyone. For a younger patient with very elastic skin, they can certainly thin the face and even be used to create more symmetry if the masseters are uneven (this can also help TMJ). As patients get older and their skin starts to sag into more jowls and lower face heaviness, there are times when it can make this look worse and the patient will actually benefit from dermal fillers in the area of the masseter and angle of jaw to lift skin up and back, improving the jawline. It's all about what is right for you.
