What do Botox injections in lips do?

Botox is typically not injected into the lips.  Botox is a muscle "relaxer" and does not provide volume or fullness to the lips.However, Botox is routinely used around the lips to help smooth vertical lines and wrinkles in the skin surrounding the reddish portion of the lips.  Botox can also be used to help elevate the corners of a "downturned"  mouth that seems to be frowning.I hope this helps.

Any
use of BOTOX® in the lower face is technically an off-label use (not approved to
be marketed by the FDA). However, some surgeons use very small amounts of
BOTOX® to soften smoker’s lines, often in combination with an injectable
filler. Some oral surgeons may use BOTOX® injections around the lip area to
improve the appearance of a smile that looks too “gummy.” If you have either of
these concerns, be sure you only visit a highly experienced injector, as too
much product in the wrong place could negatively impact your ability to move
your mouth, including issues with speaking and eating.

Botox can help reduce the appearance of smoker's lines above the upper lip. In general, Botox is not injected into the lips. To add fullness to the lips, a filler such as Juvederm is used. Botox can be helpful in very specific concerns of the upper lip or downturned corners of the mouth but overall, the indications are few. It will certainly not make your lips more "pouty." That is really the realm of artfully placed fillers.

Thank you for your question.  Botox is not injected into the red part of the lip.  At times, it is injected in the upper lip skin to paralyze the muscle around the upper lip that contributes to the fine lines around the lip skin.  At times this can help to relax the fine lines but at the cost of not being able to purse the lips well (whistle, use a straw, etc)

Injecting Botox the upper lip can help with the smokers lines however it also decreases the movement of your upper lip and some patients don't like that frozen look. Another option for the smokers lines is to fill them with a filler which works really great. A third surgical option is a very popular procedure called lip lift which overall shortens the upper lip and gives you more youthful and attractive appearance.

Botox shouldn't be injected directly into the lip but can be used for those with lip lines that are worse when the lip is pursed (kissing or fish lip type face).  I would seek someone with experience in doing this, as it can change the function of your lip if it is not done properly at the right dosage.  I wish you the best of luck, Dr. Emer.

Botox is use off label (not approved by FDA) to soften the fine vertical lines at the lip margin. A very small dose is used in 2 to 4 sites at the lip margin which softens the lines.  A large dose will cause drooling and lip asymmetry and this probably only should be done by an experienced injector.  Further the patient might benefit from laser or filler in addition to, or in lieu of Botox .   Injections of Juvederm are my favorite method of treating these lines but I use a micro injection technique and micro massage right above the vermilion cutaneous border which I find gives a pleasing, well defined lip without causing it to be too plumped.  A few patients that want abnormally plumped lips I send to another practitioner.

Lip
lines/wrinkles are a common concern for my patients. Depending on the severity
of the lines/wrinkles it may be necessary to inject filler for best results.

However,
when you inject Botox in that area you relax the muscle smoothing the upper
lip, this also pulls the muscle up giving the appearance of a pouty mouth.

It is best
to consult with a Board Certified Dermatologist to see if this treatment is
appropriate for you.

Botox is very helpful for treatment of lip lines (Smoker Lines) that radiate outward from the lip. It can also be placed in the DAO muscle to provide some lift to the corners of the mouth.
