Do any surgeons use the Glasgold wafer? How does it work? Does it make the implant less stable?

There are many sizes and shapes of implants and I prefer to use an implant to match the patient's anatomic problem. When additional extension is needed, I generally recommend a genioplasty procedure because there is less concern with making the chin appear wider. Larger implants make the chin appear wider and therefore less feminine. A genioplasty moves your natural chin forward without making it appear wider. In addition, the mentalis muscle reattaches and allows for natural movement of this muscle. Both procedures are performed in our office with intravenous sedation anesthesia and neither procedure changes the bite or ability to chew.

A wafer can be used to adjust the size of an implant or to get someone a bit more advancement. We do a lot of chin implants, and, by the way, the problem may be the EAC in general. The EAC has lateral extension and tends to be better for women. There is an AC implant that lacks the lateral width and looks much more attractive typically. So, the summary is, yes, we do the wafer or similar when necessary, but that may not be the entire issue for you.

Most women do not favor EAC implants because of the lateral width. But in the event when a female does prefer some added chin width and needs a large amount of central projection the wafer can have a role to play in that situation. Or rather than adding another implant to an existing implant the larger implant can simply have the wings thinned down during surgery....thus needing only one implant.
