Thanks for your question. I would not recommend IPL on African American skin, and I would not see any doctor who would. What I do suggest to lift hyperpigmented lesions off of darker skin tones in the Pico laser, as it is safe and effective. Best of LuckAnil Shah MD
This needs an in-person evaluation, but you may be able to have IPL. I always combine IPL with microneedling/prp to improve outcomes. I recommend getting a formal evaluation with a cosmetic dermatologist. Best, Dr. Emer
IPL for African American skin can be challenging to treat, especially for the darker skin tones. You may end up with more complications than success. Hi there-- IPL targets pigment, and the darker your skin, the more risk of complications including hyperpigmentation and burns. Second, to clarify another person's answer, IPL has an overall rejuvenating effect on the skin, but there is no significant skin tightening.
IPL works for skin tightening with your skin type but if your goal is to have your complexion treated with IPL I would definitely discourage it. While I wish I could advise you avoid the sun altogether, it's not practical. Give yourself at least two weeks of no sun exposure and make sure you have good, if not perfect, habits following. Apply and reapply sunscreen, wear a hat, and don't run at high noon. BestAnil Shah MD
