Can microneedling cause nerve damage?

Microneedling is a great option for any type of facial scar.  It can be used in all skin colors and skin types. The small needles cause new in juries in the skin and activate the healing process to make new skin.  The depth of needles depends on the depth of scar.  
Make sure you see a Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon to assess the need for deep treatment or superficial treatment.  Consider adding Platelet Rich Plasma to your treatment to activate more healing growth factors and greater collagen growth and scar remodeling.

Microneedling is great for scars, fine lines, and collagen stimulation. The microneedling needles are not deep enough to reach your nerves. With that said I recommend you get microneedling by an experienced physician.

Microneedling if properly administered should not cause any nerve damage.  Microneedling is effective for both acne scaring and trauma scaring.  Having said that you should see a facial plastic surgeon to see if you won't need subcision incision prior to doing the microneedling.  All the best from Boston, Dr. Onir

Thanks for your question. As long as you see a well experienced provider with a proper understanding of the anatomy this should not occur. Generally, the nerves are located deeper than what the microneedling pen treats. To be safe we would recommend a microneedling procedure no deeper than 3mm. However, multiple treatments will be needed to improve the texture and appearance of the scar. Best of luck with your procedure! 

Yes, it can- some companies are now developing 5 mm needles, hitting nerves in your temple area or the facial nerve along the mandible is a significant concern.
