How soon after liposuction can I resume intense workout/activities?

This is something you should discuss with your surgeon. For my patients I tell them they will have swelling for 4 to 6 weeks but may have some swelling last 2 to 4 months. You may get 10 to 15% swelling with exercise for 6 to 9 months. I want my patients to avoid strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks as it can trigger fluid retention in the treated areas. Good luck.

Liposuction patients can expect to resume normal activity within 1 to 2 weeks after their operation. Most patients return to office work with 3–5 days after their liposuction; people with more active jobs may need 14 days before they return to work. Exercise is typically recommended after two weeks to minimize adhesion between skin and deeper tissues. Patients can begin walking, swimming, or riding a stationary bicycle a few days after surgery. In my experience it's possible for patients after liposuction to start working out as quickly as they feel comfortable, which is usually 1-2 weeks.

Thank you for your question. Recovery can range from 5-7 days for liposuction and exercise in 3 weeks. Patients will wear a compression garment for the first 6 weeks after their surgery to reduce swelling and bruising as well as to promote proper healing of the underlying tissues. Usually by about 6-8 weeks most swelling is gone, but it will fluctuate for several more months with activity.

Most plastic surgeons motivate patients to begin a gentle walk routine three to four days after liposuction. After liposuction, it is essential to perform exercises in a moderate way to avoid the formation of blood clots in the legs and other postoperative complications. Generally after two weeks of liposuction, patients may begin to increase activity levels, but vigorous exercise should be avoided for at least the first month for the body to have the time to recover.
