Should I continue with my antibiotics before a dental procedure after breast augmentation?

Hello, im 2.5 months after surgery. I had to get a root canal because my tooth was hurting. No infection. I decided to take amoxicillin 1 hour before the first procedure (nerve removal) and im having the rest of the treatment tommorow. Should i continue with amoxicillin every 8 hours, or just before every procedure. And how many days after. Thank you so much in advance

Thank you for your question. Every surgeon has their own protocol regarding prophylactic antibiotics for procedures after patients have undergone breast augmentation surgery. There are pros and cons for taking and not taking them. I recommend you ask your surgeon for their protocol. Best of luck.

I advise my patients to take antibiotics the day before, day of, and one day after a dental procedure that produces blood (like a cleaning) for a period of one year after breast augmentation surgery. Antibiotics are made so that they are somewhat localized in what kind of area they target, though a more precise explanation would be to say they target certain pathogens. In any case. your dental procedure certainly should take priority over the cosmetic procedure. As if you have not presented any signs of infections in the first week after the cosmetic procedure, means you are pretty much out of danger in that area. So focus on you dental procedure and follow the recommendations of your dentist.

Your question is a good one, and the answers vary based on scientific medical studies and personal experience.  In the past it was recommended that patients with artificial heart valves and implanted surgical devices, such as hip replacements and breast implants, take one dose of an antibiotic such as amoxacillin or cephalexin 1 hour before a surgical or dental procedure.  More recent studies have not demonstrated that an antibiotic is necessary, except for a few particular types of replacement heart valves. The standard of care no longer recommends taking antibiotics, but a single pre-treatment antibiotic would not be a problem, either. You should do well, either way.
