I had breast implants removed due to infection, but still get pains 4 months later in my breast. Is this normal? (photo)

Question

The surgeon took out the right implant, washed it and re-inserted it to try and save it even though I had an infection so my right breast had 3 x surgeries inc the mastectomy and explant. The right breast is still painful 4 months on, but I don’t know if that’s because an infection is still there. I’ve had two courses of antibiotics, plus, I’ve switched surgeons for another reconstruction later this year which will be around 11-12 months post explant.

I'm sorry to hear of the issues you have had.  I encourage you to visit with your surgeon to discuss your symptoms.  There are many things that can contribute to the pain you are experiencing.  Your surgeon can address an infection if one is present.  You will want to ensure that you are clear of all infection before proceeding with further breast surgery.

Thank you for sharing your question and pictures. Although some time has passed 4 months is still early and you have not yet fully healed. I would address your concerns with you PS as a one on one is needed to fully determine is there may be an active infection.

Hi and welcome to our forum!
I am sorry to hear of your complications following breast augmentation. Following explantation, the wound heals with deposition of scar tissue. Initially the tissues may become "stuck together" due to the associated inflammation of healing. This may cause a degree of discomfort with arm and shoulder motion. As healing progresses, the tissues will usually delineate into anatomic entities. However, some tissues may continue to adhere, creating adhesions which may continue to be painful. This discomfgort would be generalized. On the other hand, a neuroma is a nerve trapped in scar which would be manifested as pain localized to one specific area. 
Infection would be manifested by redness, pain, swelling, drainage, or fever. 
Modalities such as ultrasound and radiofrequency energy are often utilized to soften the tissues and desensitize the area. 
It is good to wait one year before attempting reconstruction to allow for subsidence of swelling and the hypervascularity of healing. Continue care with your new plastic surgeon.
