I would like to have a tummy tuck to improve my self image. I look like I am pregnant I have a gall bladder scar that goes almost across my stomach. One doctor told me that this would be dangerous.
Answer: Kocher Incision and Tummy Tuck Thank you for your question. While your surgeon is correct that the large Kocher incision used in a open gallbladder surgery does compromise some of the blood vessels to the abdominal tissue, this scar is not an absolute contraindication to a tummy tuck. The procedure does need to be modified to keep it safe. The safety consideration is the healing of the central part of the skin flap. Modifications need to be made to keep the blood supply intact to ensure healing without a wound complication. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Answer: Tummy tuck following gallbladder surgery Tummy tuck surgery can be altered for patients who have a large gallbladder scar to decrease the risk of complications. However, only a plastic surgeon who has examined your abdomen can give you a good idea of the options, and the risks and benefits of surgery.

Answer: Gall bladder incisions do complicate the standard tummy tuck, but an exam is needed. Examination, pictures, and history are all indicated for a detailed answer to this question. Your tummy tuck will need to be tailored to you. I have personally performed tummy tucks on patients as yourself as is described, so it can be done, but seek out an expert for your concern.

Answer: I have a large gall bladder incision and was told that a tummy tuck would not be good in my case I have done tummy tucks many times in situations like this without complications, but an exam or pictures and discussion would be helpful. I would search for the board certified plastic surgeon who you feel is most likely to give you the best results and who performs hundreds of these procedures each year. I would look at patient reviews as well as before and after photos on that surgeon's website.Kenneth Hughes, MDLos Angeles, CA

Answer: I have a large gall bladder incision and was told that a tummy tuck would not be good in my case Tummy tuck surgery in your case can be potentially problematic if there is a long transverse scar present after your gallbladder surgery (open). If the longer scar is present, potential problems with blood supply to the abdominal wall flap raised during tummy tuck surgery should be considered. A limited undermining tummy tuck operation ( with the standard transverse incision) will be your best bet. You may wish to post photos with your next question for more precise responses. When the time is right, seek consultation with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeons who can demonstrate significant experience ( and safety record) achieving the types of outcomes you will be pleased with. I hope this, and the attached link, helps. Best wishes.
