How long will it take to see the final result of face fat grafting?

Question

I have slight marionette lines & a "thumb print" dent on both cheeks so I'm thinking about fat grafting....I heard that because of the swelling and slow fat absorption, it takes at least 3 months to see the final result of your new look and it only last couple of years....is this true? Thank you

Dear urhinyness,every surgery will cause swelling and facial surgeries are associated with more severe swelling which usually resolves after 3-6 months. In most cases, the patient will lose some of transferred fat. If you are considering a surgery, I would suggest you to consult a board-certified plastic surgeon. Yes, swelling is typical after fat transfer and can last 3-6 months. Harvesting is important to fat transfer. Yes, I use water-assisted fat harvesting which gives pure fat to transfer and combine with platelet rich plasma (PRP) to get the most viable and sustainable fat cells. It can take about 3 months after surgery before swelling will dissipate and you will see the full result of facial fat grafting. This being said, results will depend on if the fat graft succeeded, meaning if it has established its own blood supply. It is possible that some fat will not “take.” If you are considering facial fat grafting, I would recommend a formal consultation with a Board-certified plastic surgeon to discuss your goals and determine the best method to achieve them.
