On the X-ray, you can see that the U of the root is no longer attached on both sides. My dentist said it cannot be saved, and offered many options (since you will be able to see the empty spot when I smile). My dental insurance is terrible, and I just don't have the money to do a crown or bridge or implant. I might be able to afford the removable tooth piece that attaches with wires to the other teeth, but I don't know the cost yet.

It is true that your remaining tooth piece will either work itself out. Or, it will heal over with bone. There is no harm leaving a small fractured piece of tooth. In fact, trying to get that piece out can push it up into the sinus, which is then a much bigger problem!
I agree with the doctor answers below. It sounds like your tooth is now fractured. Temporary material is weak. Even if the tooth had a filling it could have fractured because the tooth becomes brittle after a root canal.
I would agree with Dr Borowski overall--I tell my patients if God's dentistry doesn't last forever mine will not either--that said, a porcelain crown if that is what you have should give you years of service unless there is severe clenching or grinding causing it to flex and crack--hope this...
