I had my upper left rear molar removed, but the tooth broke and a piece of the root is still in my mouth! i was told that the piece will work its way out by itself! true or false?

I agree with the doctor answers below. It sounds like your tooth is now fractured. Temporary material is weak. Even if the tooth had a filling it could have fractured because the tooth becomes brittle after a root canal.
I would agree with Dr Borowski overall--I tell my patients if God's dentistry doesn't last forever mine will not either--that said, a porcelain crown if that is what you have should give you years of service unless there is severe clenching or grinding causing it to flex and crack--hope this...
I would suggest getting this looked at by your dentist. If the chipped piece is stuck in your lip it could cause an infection. You should also see about having the tooth repaired or smoothed.
