How long can the tissue expander stay in?

Mine was placed in august 2012. If I wait another few months I have more sick time to use and I decided to go to the diep flap which may require me to be home from work longer. Thank you! Lora

I have seen tissue expanders stay in for a long period of time.  They can stay in as long as you don't currently have an infection, a rupture or the expander isn't exposed.    If you're not having complications, they can stay in for now.

A tissue expander is not a permanent implant. Keeping it a few extra months should not be a problem when performing a second stage procedure.

I have left expanders in for over a year, with no side effects.  Eventually, however, they must be removed and replaced with a permanent prosthesis.
