I'm getting a breast implant exchange capsuloplasty -bilateral? I'm 5'2 98 lbs and 6 years ago I had a breast augmentation for 350cc saline implants. I'm getting them redone after I had my daughter my breast implant droop a little bit..so I'm getting now 450cc silicone implant. And my doctor said he wants to do a capsuloplasty along with it...? I'm still not to sure how the results look ? Good? and do they do it through the same scar? Does it change the shape of my breast? Does the recovery hurt

Hi Heidinm,This can mean a number of different variations on surgically adjusting the scar capsule surrounding the breast implant.  It might include capsulotomy which is a selective opening of parts of the scar capsule to allow the implant to move higher, lower, or to one side or the other.  It could include capsulorrhaphy which is a tightening of the scar capsule to push the implant higher, lower, or to one side to correct malposition.  Often these two techniques are combined to adjust the capsule to better fit an implant.  Your capsule may be too tight for a larger implant, or if the tissues have stretched since the initial implant, may require tightening.  These are usually performed through the same incision as is used for the implant insertion.  Your surgeon is the best person to ask about this.  Best regards,-Erik Hoy, M.D.

Thank you for the question!  A capsulorraphy or capsuloplasty is an internal manipulation of the capsule.  This is a broad term that can mean expanding a capsule, removing part or a capsule, closing part of a capsule, or all of the above.  Since, you are have a larger implant placed, your current capsule will not be big enough.  Your surgeon will have to do additional work to make the surgery successful.  He / she will be able to tell you with greater accuracy what is planned.  -- Dr. Mussman

You will find that you will be able to receive much more accurate/relevant information from your plastic surgeon, as opposed to online consultants, given that he/she knows exactly what is planned.  Generally speaking,  capsulorraphy refers to a surgical technique that is used to adjust the capsule surrounding breast implants;  this technique may help prevent breast implants from migrating into  undesired areas. For example, the technique  may be helpful in treat implanting malposition problems such as bottoming out, lateral displacement, symmastia etc.  Again, best to discuss your questions/concerns directly with your plastic surgeon who'll always be your best resource. That is a very nonspecific term and you would need to ask your surgeon if he means tightening the capsule (capsulorrhaphy) or enlarging it (capsulotomy) which are very specific terms.
