How long after subglandulars can I go back to dancing?

Question

I’m an exotic dancer planning subglandular implants of around 500c. I’ve heard the healing time is substantially shorter than submuscular, and as a dancer who doesn’t actually do a lot of upper body work (no pole tricks), how long would a reasonable estimate for downtime be? And is there any reason I would need to take time off work beforehand?

Hello, thank you for your question. Although it is a less recovery in the sense that compared to sub muscular, a sub glandular implant means less pain ability to lift lights things slightly sooner, no post op massage of the implant unless there capsular contracture. Technically slightly shorted recovery in feeling back to normal but keep in mind that the skin where the sutures are placed and the tissue underneath is still healing up until the 4 w marking point. So perhaps with the advice of your Plastic Surgeon you can go back on post op week 5  vs 6. I would again suggest talking to your plastic surgeon before hand to not disrupt or deform the healing process which can potentially put you out for your longer.

Each surgeon has their own opinion therefore you should follow your surgeon’s, particularly since they’ll be more familiar with the specifics of your situation. Generally speaking, however, you’ll need to take some time off after surgery to recover, even if you’re not using your upper body when dancing. This could be anywhere from a month or more, depending on what your surgeon says. The same goes for taking time off before your surgery -please ask your surgeon.

Typically patients are able to return to strenuous activity after six weeks, which would include dancing.  Your surgeon may vary this based on how you're progressing through recovery.  There is no need to take time off prior to surgery.

In my opinion, you would be fine to return to work within two weeks with no upper body work. I recommend speaking with your plastic surgeon for their specific post-operative guidelines.

Thanks for your question! If you were my patient, I would want you to wait 3 weeks whether we did submuscular or subglandular. You still have fresh incisions and a pocket forming. You are still at higher risk for a hematoma in that early post-op period. I would check with your plastic surgeon and see what their recommendation is. Good luck!
