Will Botox make dry eyes worse?

Question

Hi there, I’ve been thinking about getting Botox in the forehead and in between the eyebrows but I have dry eyes - will it make them worse? I have had Botox years ago in the forehead and I had terrible side effects for about two weeks (nausea, dizziness, headache, real heavy feeling in my head and eye sockets). I didn’t have dry eyes at this stage though. I’m wondering if a smaller dose would reduce the side effects? I mainly want it to lift the tails of my brows.

hello, no it will not cause the dry eyes. it may dry your forehead though. for some people botox may cause headache and heaviness which paracetamol may help.

If Botox is not an option for you, Dysport or Xeomin are the next options. I suggest dermarolling at home to give the skin Botox-like effects with at-home treatment. See an expert. Best, Dr. Emer

I'm sorry to hear of the issues you had with prior Botox treatments. For the areas you are wanting to treat with Botox you should not experience dry eyes.  I encourage you to select an expert injector and discuss your concerns for best results.

To lift the tails of the brows, we inject into the superolateral orbicularis oculi, the muscle that surrounds the eye which normally brings your eyebrow down and helps you close your eye. Botox into the glabella and forehead does not cause dry eyes, but injecting into the orbicularis oculi can may eyes dry, because you are unable to close your eye all the way. I would discuss this with your provider before proceeding.

Sorry you had adverse reactions to Botox in the past.  I have had patients report worse dry eyes after injections in lower lids but not elsewhere.

Thank you for your question. At times, the placement of Botox injections can cause the side effects you experienced, and neurotoxins should not affect dry eyes. I highly recommend you consult with a board certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon, who is an experienced injector. Take care and good luck.
